1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
The National Aeronautical Information Processing System (NAIPS) provides a central database of Meteorological, NOTAM and chart information. The system is used by the Australian Flight Information Centre (AusFIC) to provide pre-flight and in-flight briefings and to accept and distribute flight notifications.
Access to the NAIPS Internet Briefing Service is available via the link on the Airservices home page http://www.airservicesaustralia.com or directly via the Briefing Home page http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/brief/.
Information available from NAIPS includes Australian and International NOTAM, status of Restricted Areas, Meteorological information (Area Forecasts, AREA QNH, TTF/METAR/SPECI, TAF, AIRMET and SIGMET), ATIS, GPS RAIM availability, First-light / Last-light and Meteorological charts. MET and NOTAM information is available on all Australian locations and selected locations outside Australia.
Flight notification details can be submitted through NAIPS in ICAO, Domestic or SARTIME format.
1.2 PC and Browser Setup
To access the NAIPS Internet service you must have a current version browser installed on your PC, such as Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2.0. Internet Explorer version 5 or lower is not suitable. 2. BRIEFING
2.1 SPFIB
MET and NOTAM information relevant to departure, destination and enroute locations is provided on a Specific Pre-Flight Information Bulletin (SPFIB). An SPFIB can be created for a maximum of 10 flight stages.
Flight files are used to store, on behalf of users, regular SPFIB details on the system. Each flight file is allocated a name which, when retrieved, will provide default values in the SPFIB form.
When the SPFIB menu item is selected, a form is displayed which allows entry of a flight file name. Enter the required name and click on the 'Submit Request' button.
Alternatively, if the flight file name is not known, a list of flight files can be obtained by entering the aircraft ID or flight number in the indicated box and clicking on the 'Submit Request' button. A list of flight files will be displayed and the required file can be selected by clicking on the name.
If a flight file is not held by NAIPS for your flight or you do not wish to use a flight file, a blank SPFIB entry form is available on the left of the screen. Select the from with the required number of flight stages. You must select the correct number of stages, as all displayed stages must be filled in.
After the initial flight file or SPFIB form has been selected, an SPFIB entry form will be displayed. Field titles in blue indicate that entering appropriate information is mandatory. The fields on the form should be entered as follows:
STAGE DETAILS:
| Aircraft ID or Flight Number: | Enter the aircraft ID or flight number. |
| Weight Category: | Enter 'L', 'M' or 'H' on the keyboard or select 'Light', 'Medium' or 'Heavy' by clicking the mouse on the field and selecting from the drop-down list. This field is used to screen out inappropriate NOTAM for your aircraft. |
| Departure: | Enter the location designator or name or latitude/longitude of the departure aerodrome. |
| Destination: | Enter the location name, authorised abbreviation or latitude and longitude of the destination aerodrome. |
| ETD: | Enter a 6-figure DTG or 4-figure UTC time for the estimated time of departure for this stage of the flight. |
| Flight Level: | Enter altitude or flight level in hundreds of feet (e.g. 080 = 8,000 ft; 150 = FL150). |
| Route Code | NAIPS stores in excess of 2000 regularly used routes and attaches standard briefing lists to these routes. These lists cover all MET and NOTAM requirements for the route. A route code is a single letter and a number (e.g. L1, L2, H1). To obtain the available codes for any route click on the 'Route Directory' link on the form and enter the Departure and Destination aerodromes in the pop-up window. When finished with the pop-up window, close it by clicking on the 'x' in the top panel. An alternative is to enter DCT (Direct) for the route code. If this option is chosen, the information provided in the SPFIB will be limited to MET and NOTAM information on the departure and destination aerodromes, and GRIB winds for levels above FL120. |
| Turning Points: | If the Route Code is left blank then up to 30 turning points can be entered using location name or latitude and longitude. These significant points are used for the wind profile report and are not necessarily locations which have associated MET or NOTAM information. |
| Additional Locations: | Enter other locations for which MET and NOTAM information is required. |
| Briefing Areas: | A briefing area is an area which is coincident with an ARFOR area (as described later for an Area Briefing). Briefings provided for these areas consist of the Area Forecast and MET and NOTAM information for locations within the area plus a buffer of 20 nm. |
| Alternate: | If you require information to an alternate aerodrome, enter the location for the alternate aerodrome. The other fields in the Alternate Details section should then be completed in a similar manner to the Main Route details. |
OPTIONS:
| True Air Speed (TAS): | Enter the True Air Speed of the aircraft as N followed by four figures (e.g. N0200 = 200 knots). |
| Validity Period: | An SPFIB can be valid for a period of one hour to 240 hours. The default validity time is 24 hours. |
| Expanded Wind Profile: | This field is relevant to flights receiving a wind / temperature profile above FL120. If not selected, the wind / temperature profile will be provided for a direct route between the departure and destination. Headwind / tailwind component (COMP) and cross track (XTRK) information will not be supplied. If selected, wind / temperature profile will be provided between each set of turning points including COMP and XTRK information. |
| Domestic Only: | Deselect this option if the flight is proceeding outside of Australia. |
| Australian International Series NOTAM: | If selected, all Australian NOTAM provided will be in international format as full text relevant to international flights only. |
| Pilot ID: | Enter the name of the pilot in command. |
After entering the required data, click on the 'Submit Request' button at the bottom of the form.
If there is an error on the form, an error message will be displayed. In this case, click the 'Back' button on your browser to return to the SPFIB entry form, correct the error and re-submit the request.
The returned SPFIB has a 5 or 6 digit briefing reference number listed at the top of the SPFIB. This number is required in order to update the SPFIB at a later time. An update can be obtained by selecting the 'Update SPFIB' function on the Briefing Home Page, by contacting the Briefing Office, or inflight by calling Flightwatch.

7. OTHER METHODS TO ACCESS NAIPS
7.1 Internet Access Client Software
The web pages available on the Internet as described in this document may be difficult to use for complex or multi-stage briefings and flight notifications because of the size of the forms and the quantity of data which has to be entered.
A graphical user input (GUI) program (NAIPS for Windows) is available for downloading for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP PCs only. The program has currently not been certified to operate under Windows Vista and may not install or run correctly.
This programs allows aircraft data and frequently used flight data to be stored locally on the PC for quick entry to SPFIB and flight notification forms.
To download this program , click on the 'download NAIPS for Windows application' link on the briefing home page.
8. INTERNET BRIEFING SERVICE AVAILABILITY
The Internet Briefing Service is dependant on the availability of the Internet and the Airservices internal network.
When the Internet service is not available, users should use other briefing services, such as AvFax or the Metbrief or alternatively, should contact the Briefing Office.
A briefing obtained from AvFax or NAIPS can also be updated by contacting the Briefing Office or in-flight through Flightwatch.
